How do we see public space?
Think of it as a highly layered experience that requires all of our senses. We must acknowledge the social, cultural, natural, historical, economic, political, and environmental simultaneously in order to acknowledge and recognize other perspectives. In this exhibition, three body-scaled shadow boxes visualize these complex relationships, presenting a deconstructed view of the public space just outside the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Through the collaging of historic images, artistic renderings, and current photographs, we can begin to envision history as histories—those seen, and those hidden in plain sight. Illuminating these layers becomes a way to imagine co-creation with communities in a healing process, creating public spaces with inclusive values. _mpathic design aims to share untold, marginalized narratives of the past and present, tracing their origins through time and space to set our design futures.
