TO QUARRY SECRET SPRINGS

Fall 2021 | UVA School of Architecture
Buildings, Cities, and Climate: The Manhattan Earth Forum

The following proposal for a climate-change-focused, public institute is located adjacent to the West Harlem Piers. The site is dominated by the elevated highways of Hendy Hudson Parkway and Riverside Drive in addition to elevated train tracks, each increasing the level of pollution in the air and the water that collects and flows down from these surfaces into the Hudson River. With the greater study of the site's water flows, the institute reconnects with the buried water springs of the past from which form follows flow. With the eventual waning of the autonomous vehicle and the removal of the highways into underground, high-speed rail, the form will support a street-accessible park, a central pavilion library, education spaces, spaces of research, and a water-cleansing system that connects with that of the city to proactively engage the institution with the mediation of climate change while bringing forth information to the public. The institution will be a part of a coastal program that creates a network that will link together education, research, proactive cleansing of our waterways, and green parks that exist along the Hudson River, cleaning our cities by connecting to the past and bringing forth its secret springs.
